Lesson Plan
Wingaru Kids is a digital platform designed to support teachers in the classroom to provide Aboriginal perspectives to all students within their teaching programs. The platform covers topics that are relevant to all Aboriginal communities.
We explore Australian history pre-1770 contact, first contact, and customary life for Aboriginal people before colonisation. We examine Indigenous science and technologies, land-management practices, and cultural expression. We also look at issues such as reconciliation, the Stolen Generation, Aboriginal identity and political movements that have influenced Aboriginal Australia today.
We have a number of Dreaming lessons, with stories from all over Australia. We consider language and explain the concept of language groups, so students begin to understand there is not just one Aboriginal language. We also look at language revitalisation and why it is so important. New lessons are added regularly so there is always something to explore.
Watch
Explore topics with fun and informative videos. Each video provides all the information students need to complete the lesson and can be watched as many times as desired.
Play
Children get to engage with the information from the video by completing digital activities. Each lesson has three activities, and the associated game centre offers additional game-based learning.
Learn
Connect with Aboriginal Australian culture by exploring the content and gaining new knowledge and perspectives. Each lesson contributes to developing students’ respect for diversity and understanding of cultural differences.
Why teach all Australian kids about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives?
Because all kids should get the chance to:
Engage with the stories and knowledge of the oldest continuous culture on earth.
Recognise more sustainable ways of living in connection with the land.
Appreciate the mistreatment of Aboriginal People since colonisation and how this has led to intergenerational trauma.
Be able to challenge the often-biased media coverage of First Nations People.
Promote a shared understanding, recognition, respect and reconciliation for future generations.
Discover the physical and chemical sciences used by Aboriginal People in their everyday lives.
All our Lessons Correlate Directly with the Australian Curriculum
Our lessons are linked to all Key Learning Areas in the curriculum so teachers can deliver Aboriginal content across their teaching program, as the curriculum intends.
This approach supports the inclusion of diverse perspectives, which ensures students are benefitting from a broad range of Indigenous knowledge and Australian history. This is both engaging and contributes to an in-depth understanding of the complexities of our country’s history as well as the spectacular culture of Australia’s First Nations.
